Corn Genetics

Lesson Description:

This lab uses ears of corn to study genetics. You will count the different color kernels, yellow and purple.

Some of the ears you will view are F2 hybrids, which means that they're the second generation offspring. To create an F2 hybrid, you begin with two pure grandparents. Next, you cross the grandparents to produce the F1 hybrids, their "children." Generally, you won't be able to tell much by looking at the F1 hybrids except to know which alleles are dominant. In the case of yellow and purple corn, the F1 cross results entirely in purple kernels.
